This three-story corner
store, Jake’s, was vacant for
nearly
thirty years. Completely renovated by Sandtown Habitat for
Humanity, it is now home to the 24 three and four-year-old
students of the fully-licensed New Song Preschool. “Who
would have believed that this building that I shopped in
and played in as a child would one day house a preschool
that I would be running?” said Preschool Director Louise
Sutherland who grew up a few houses away on Stricker
Street.
Last fall, New Song Preschool adopted the Core Knowledge
Curriculum as part of a city-wide program sponsored by The
Abell Foundation. The curriculum’s blend of social skills
and school readiness matches the philosophy of New Song
and brought intensive staff training and resources. The
results? A graduating class far more advanced in writing
and phonics than any other in the programs’ ten year
history. We look forward to seeing how our first “Core”
group will progress in kindergarten at New Song Academy
this fall.
